What to Look for When Touring a Senior Care Home — 15 Questions to Ask
Touring a senior care home can be overwhelming. Here are the 15 most important questions to ask and the subtle signs to look for that reveal the true quality of care.
Touring a senior care home for your parent or loved one is one of the most emotionally charged experiences a family can go through. You want to make the right choice, but you may not know exactly what to look for or what questions to ask. Brochures and websites can make any place look wonderful. The tour is where the truth comes out.
Over the years at Archer Senior Living, we have welcomed hundreds of families into our homes. Many of them tell us that by the time they reached us, they had already toured several other places and felt discouraged. They were not sure what they were seeing or whether their concerns were valid. We always tell them the same thing: trust your instincts. Your gut feeling when you walk through the door is one of the most reliable indicators of quality care.
But instinct works best when it is paired with knowledge. Here are fifteen questions we encourage every family to ask when touring any senior care home or facility, along with what to watch for between the lines.
Question one: What is the caregiver-to-resident ratio during the day and at night? This is the single most important question you can ask. The state of Michigan sets minimum staffing requirements, but many facilities operate at or near the minimum. At Archer Senior Living, we maintain twice the state-required caregiver ratio. With only six residents per home, that means your loved one always has someone available.
Question two: How long have your current caregivers been working here? High turnover is a red flag. It signals low wages, poor working conditions, or management problems. Consistent staff means your loved one builds relationships and receives care from people who truly know them.
Question three: Are rooms private or shared? Dignity matters. At both of our Livingston County homes, Maple Manor of Pinckney at 7119 Pinckney Rd, Pinckney, MI, and Maple Manor of Hamburg at 9090 Chilson Rd, Brighton, MI, all six rooms are completely private.
Question four: Who prepares the meals, and can I see a sample menu? Home-cooked meals prepared on-site are a world apart from mass-produced food from a commercial kitchen. At our homes, every meal is made from scratch by people who know each resident's dietary needs and preferences.
Question five: What is included in the monthly rate, and are there any additional fees? As we discuss in our article on hidden fees, many facilities use level-of-care charges that can dramatically increase costs. Ask for a complete breakdown in writing.
Question six: Can I visit anytime, or are there restricted visiting hours? A home that restricts visiting hours may be trying to control what families see. We welcome families at any time, because we have nothing to hide.
Question seven: What happens if my loved one's needs increase? Understanding the plan for escalating care needs is crucial. Some facilities will ask your loved one to leave if their needs exceed a certain level. Ask about their policy upfront.
Question eight: Can I speak with families of current residents? This is one of the most revealing questions you can ask. If a home is reluctant to connect you with current families, ask yourself why. At Archer Senior Living, we actively encourage families to speak with one another.
Question nine: What is your staff training and certification process? Caregivers should be trained in first aid, CPR, medication administration, and dementia care at a minimum. Ask about ongoing education and how the home handles medical emergencies.
Question ten: How do you handle medication management? Errors in medication administration are a serious concern in senior care. Ask who administers medications, how they are stored, and what systems are in place to prevent mistakes.
Question eleven: What does a typical day look like for residents? This question reveals a lot about the culture of the home. Are residents engaged in meaningful activities, or are they left to sit in front of a television all day? In a small home like ours, each day is structured around the residents' interests and routines.
Question twelve: How do you handle behavioral challenges, particularly with memory care residents? Look for answers that emphasize patience, redirection, and individualized approaches rather than medication-based solutions.
Question thirteen: What are your most recent state inspection results? Any licensed care home in Michigan can be looked up through the state licensing database. Ask the home to share their results openly. A willingness to discuss inspection findings is a sign of accountability and transparency.
Question fourteen: Is the home AFC licensed, and what does that licensing require? In Michigan, AFC homes undergo regular inspections and must meet specific standards for safety, staffing, and care. Both of our homes are fully AFC licensed, and we take pride in exceeding the minimum standards.
Question fifteen: What makes your home different from the other options in this area? Listen carefully to the answer. If it is all about amenities like a swimming pool, a beauty salon, or a fitness center, consider whether those things actually matter to your loved one. At Archer Senior Living, our answer is simple: we are small, we are family-run, we keep twice the required caregivers, and every resident is treated like a member of our family.
When you are on the tour, pay attention to the small things. Does the home smell clean and fresh? Are the residents clean and well-groomed? Do caregivers interact warmly with residents, or do they seem rushed and distracted? Is the home quiet and peaceful, or chaotic and loud? Are there personal touches in the common areas and resident rooms?
We would love to welcome you to one of our homes so you can see these answers in action. Schedule a tour by calling (248) 854-4944. Come with your list of questions. We look forward to answering every one of them.
